You know the ole saying-"everyone has an opinion". Well here's mine. Ready, aim, fire ! I have no doubt that a lot of time and money have gone into developing and promoting some of the so called leading accounting and bookkeeping computer programs. What makes them stand out ? In a nutshell-name recognition. Almost all those in a business setting have heard of the big name accounting software brands.

If a business is using these software products and wanting my help, I cringe and my first impulse is to take off running. Why ? In my opinion, some accounting software has too many bells and whistles that a small business doesn't need. If me being a degreed accountant have problems and difficulties using the software, what about you ? As I stated on the homepage of my website, I don't know about you, but too many choices tend to confuse instead of enlighten me.

In a lot of cases, I was proven right. The money spent on the software was "flushed down the toilet" and the software just collected dust and was never used. This hasn't ever been you has it ?

What makes me an expert ? Easy because I've been there, done it, and got the t-shirt. I've written accounting software applications for small businesses because I thought the products out there were too difficult to actually be used by most small businesses and no I didn't charge any kind of additional annual "maintenance fees".

My biggest pet peeve when it comes to Payroll Software is having to pay yearly update and maintenance fees whenever the payroll tax tables change.

I don't want any misunderstandings. I don't have any problem with paying an additional fee for upgrades that improve upon and add new features to the software. I realize that an investment of additional time and money went in to making those improvements. I also have a choice. If I'm happy with my current version, I don't have to purchase the upgrade.

It restores my faith in life and business ethics when someone comes along and provides a great product, at a reasonable price, and doesn't trick us with add on services or special subscriptions hidden in the small print that we have to pay additional fees for in order to be able to fully utilize the software that we paid up front for. It kind of reminds me of a poor divorced guy/gal that has to pay alimony for the rest of his/her life to see the kids.

Well I actually ran across a company that fits the bill and has a product that can wean you away from your high priced annual maintenance or payroll update fees. It's nice when you can find one accounting program that handles all the bookkeeping, accounting, and financial tasks for your company, but in reality unless your company develops their own in-house program none probably exists. Some "canned" software is just better than others.
