Statistics Tutorials

These courses provide information and tools that help businesses deal with uncertainty when analyzing business situations.

Rice Virtual Lab in Statistics
An online statistics book with links to other statistics resources on the web.

Online Text In Introductory Statistics
presented by SURFSTAT Australia. Another good online statistics book that is the primary learning resource for students taking Introductory Statistics at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Professor Hossein Arsham's Course
An excellent introductory statistics course. Materials on this site are tailored to help you make better decisions and to get you thinking statistically. A cardinal objective for this site is to embed statistical thinking into managers, who must often decide with little information.

StatSoft
This Electronic Statistics Textbook offers training in the understanding and application of advanced statistical topics.

Statistics Every Writer Should Know.
Described in plain English, are some basic concepts in statistics that every writer (and finance or accounting student) should know.

Introductory Statistics: Concepts, Models, and Applications by David W. Stockburger.
This online text contains an introductory discussion of basic statistical concepts.

Multivariate Statistics: Concepts, Models, and Applications, by David W. Stockburger (Southwest Missouri State University).
In-depth coverage, with extensive use of web technology (animated graphics, interactive calculating pages).

HyperStat Online Textbook by David M. Lane.
An online statistics textbook containing Java and Javascript applications.

Resampling: The New Statistics, by Julian L. Simon.
Covers probability, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals and sample size calculations and is an excellent introduction to simulation, bootstrap methods (sampling with replacement from the observed data to assess variability of a sample statistic), and permutation tests (comparison of observed differences between samples to differences obtained by randomly shuffling the samples together and re-dividing them).

Seeing Statistics by Gary McClelland
An online textbook containing many animated (Java) demonstrations. A tour, and part of the complete book, is available free.

Web Pages that Perform Statistical Calculations
Links to a cornucopia of sites that do interactive statistical calculations -- e.g., regression analysis.

Data Analysis, Statistics, & Probability
Requires free registration to access the courses. Courses actually designed for teachers but provide excellent information for any user wanting to learn. Also requires broadband connection and Windows Media Player to see video.

A video- and Web-based course on basic concepts of statistics. Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability introduces statistics as a problem-solving process. In this course, you can build your skills through investigations of different ways to collect and represent data, and describe and analyze variation in data. Through practical examples, you will come to understand some statistical concepts, such as data representation, variation, the mean and median, bivariate data, probability, designing statistical experiments, and population estimations.

Inside Statistics Another excellent statistics tutorial.

Probabilities and Statistics
The University of Alabama's Mathematical Sciences Department has made available the Virtual Laboratories in Probabilities and Statistics website. The project's focus is to "provide interactive, web-based modules for students and teachers of probability and statistics." It specifically emphasizes mathematical analysis, data analysis, and simulation analysis. Sections are divided into Special Models, Basic Probability, and Basic Statistics and each of these sections is further divided into unit topics.

Vassar College
Provides some more advanced statistical concepts and tools.

NetMBA
Quick review of some statistical concepts.

Web Interface for Statistics Education (WISE).
Contains interactive statistics tutorials and links to databases, on-line statistics journals and discussion groups, and links to other sites dedicated to statistics.

Statnotes: An Online Textbook by G. David Garson.
This online text contains a discussion of basic statistical concepts.

Statistics at Square One
Another excellent online textbook.

TimeWeb
TimeWeb is a free UK service offering Web-based time series databanks and materials to help you develop effective data-handling skills.

  • Digging - digging for data. Where can you find it? What does it mean? Which data types should you be looking for? How do you know it is reliable?
  • Crunching - crunching or processing the data. How can you process and analyse the data? How can you test the data? How can you relate different data types together?
  • Buffing - polishing or finishing the data. How should you display it to best effect? How can you evaluate it? How can you check the picture isn't distorted?

StatiBot
StatiBot is an interactive program that guides you through your data step by step until you find the proper test method. The user interface resembles the wizards known from popular user software (e.g. Word and Excel), or from installation programs. As a result of your work with StatiBot you will have:

  • selected the proper test method,
  • calculated the test results,
  • interpreted the results,
  • and a quotation ready to be published.

Introduction to Quantitative Methods
The main topics include:

  • Graphing and tabulating data
  • Describing data sets: central tendency, variability and skew
  • Normal curve and standard scores
  • Correlation and regression
  • Proportions and Contingencies
  • Sampling and statistical inference
